Empowering Communities to Shape Energy Futures
In 2025, navigating the landscape of energy in the United States can feel overwhelming, especially as older, polluting energy systems still dominate our legislative and infrastructural framework. However, there's a growing tide of change at the grassroots level, largely centered around the potential of rural electric cooperatives (RECs). Serving approximately 42 million people across the nation, these cooperatives are non-profit utilities in which each member has a voice and a vote in decisions that affect their energy sources and policies.
Join the REC Co-lab for a Just Energy Transition
This March, Shareable and the Rural Power Coalition invite you to participate in the newly launched Rural Electric Cooperative Co-lab. Kicking off on March 4th, this series of informative sessions will delve into the crucial role that RECs could play in realizing a democratic energy future that prioritizes renewable sources. The co-lab's free workshops will educate participants about cooperative governance, funding sources, and strategies for community engagement, ultimately empowering member-owners to drive energy transition efforts.
The Importance of Community Participation
Rural electric cooperatives were born from a desire to democratize electricity access in the U.S., particularly in the 1930s when many rural areas were neglected by private providers. Despite their original goals, many cooperatives today still struggle with outdated management practices and reliance on fossil fuels. The REC Co-lab aims to transform this by emphasizing that every member has the potential to be an active participant in reshaping their energy landscape. As noted in recent research, community engagement is essential in elevating the cooperative's performance and ensuring they reflect the diverse voices of their members.
Charting the Course for Energy Justice
As we engage with the REC Co-lab, it's essential to recognize that we stand at a pivotal moment for achieving energy justice. This initiative not only seeks to enhance the functionality of electric cooperatives but also aims to empower member-owners, particularly in marginalized communities, ensuring they have real influence over decisions affecting their energy sources. Those involved have an invaluable opportunity to transform their concerns into actionable policies, tackling issues like energy costs, community welfare, and climate impacts.
A Vision for a Bright Energy Future
The stakes are high as over $40 billion is earmarked for bolstering this energy transition. Now is the time for collective action and education through platforms like the REC Co-lab, fostering a future where energy is accessible, equitable, and sustainable. Let's come together to champion changes that will benefit our communities and the planet.
